Buying a used Jeep engine
Jeep splits into two eras: the 4.0 inline-six that built the brand reputation, and the Pentastar V6 that replaced it. They are very different buying propositions.
4.0L inline-six
One of the most durable engines in this catalog, widely reported to pass 200,000 to 300,000 miles on basic maintenance. Reported problems are peripheral rather than internal: cracked exhaust manifolds, oil leaks and water pumps. A high-mileage 4.0 is often a better buy than a low-mileage alternative.
3.6L Pentastar V6
Shares the Chrysler head and rocker arm reporting described on our Chrysler and Dodge pages. Later production addressed the early cylinder head issue, so build year is the question.
Before you order
On the 4.0, condition and accessories matter more than mileage. Tell us which accessories you need included, because the manifolds and brackets vary across the platforms this engine went into.

VIN & interchange codes
How Jeep engines are identified by VIN
Jeep engines of the same displacement can differ by VIN code, emissions package, and build - which changes the correct part. Here is the real interchange breakdown for a 2015 Jeep Cherokee, the kind of detail a specialist confirms from your VIN before anything ships:
| Engine / application | Interchange # |
|---|---|
| 2.4L (VIN B, 8th digit) engine ID ED6 (Federal) | 300-7060A |
| 2.4L (VIN B, 8th digit) engine ID ED8 (PZEV) | 300-7060B |
| 3.2L (VIN S, 8th digit) one piece oil pan | 300-7061A |
| 3.2L (VIN S, 8th digit) two piece oil pan (opt AWL) | 300-7061B |
Interchange data shown for reference. Availability and exact application are confirmed per order from your complete VIN.

FAQ
Used Jeep engines & transmissions
How much does a used Jeep engine cost?
Price tracks the engine family more than the model year, and on Jeep that usually means which of the 4.0L inline-six and 3.6L Pentastar V6 you need. Displacement alone does not settle it, because the same badge can cover variants that differ in cost and availability. Tell us the year, model and VIN and you get a firm quote on the engine your vehicle actually takes, with availability confirmed before you pay.
Which Jeep engines do you carry?
We regularly source Jeep engines across the lineup, including the 6.4L V8, 5.7L V8, 4.0L I6, 3.7L V6, 3.6L V6, 3.0L V6 Turbo Diesel. If you don't see your exact engine, tell us the year, model, and VIN and a specialist confirms the right one before you pay.
Do you sell used Jeep transmissions too?
Yes. Alongside used and remanufactured Jeep engines, we source manual, automatic, and CVT Jeep transmissions matched to your vehicle, backed by the same 12-month parts-replacement warranty.
Will the engine fit my exact Jeep?
Fitment is confirmed before you pay. On the 4.0, condition and accessories matter more than mileage. Tell us which accessories you need included, because the manifolds and brackets vary across the platforms this engine went into. Give us the year, model and 17-digit VIN and a specialist matches the correct engine to your exact application.
Are your used engines and transmissions tested?
Yes. Every used engine and transmission is compression- and oil-pressure tested and put through a rigorous inspection process by automotive experts before they ship.
What warranty comes with a part?
Every engine and transmission includes a 12-month parts-replacement warranty, plus lifetime support from ASE-certified experts. Approved claims are handled by replacement or store credit - we do not issue cash refunds. Labor is not covered on the standard warranty. You can upgrade to 3-year parts and labor coverage for $499 at the time of purchase. Full warranty details are provided with your order.
Can I get a longer warranty that covers labor?
Yes. The standard coverage is 12 months on parts. For $499 you can upgrade to a 3-year warranty that covers both parts and labor, purchased at the time of your order. Ask your specialist to add it when you confirm your part.
