Buying a used GMC engine

GMC shares its engine families with Chevrolet, so the buying questions are the same: whether the truck V8 carries cylinder deactivation, and on diesels which injector generation you have.

5.3L / 6.2L V8

Lifter failure associated with Active Fuel Management and Dynamic Fuel Management is the dominant reported issue on the later generations, and it affects the 6.2L as well as the 5.3L. Owners report it is not resolved by tuning the system off after the fact.

Duramax diesel

The concerns are generation-specific. Early LB7 injector failure and later LML fuel system complaints are the recurring items, and they are different repairs with different costs.

Before you order

On the gas V8s, confirm whether the donor has cylinder deactivation hardware. On the Duramax, the generation decides the fuel system, so we match on VIN rather than displacement.

VIN & interchange codes

How GMC engines are identified by VIN

GMC engines of the same displacement can differ by VIN code, emissions package, and build - which changes the correct part. Here is the real interchange breakdown for a 2015 GMC Sierra 1500, the kind of detail a specialist confirms from your VIN before anything ships:

Engine / applicationInterchange #
4.3L (VIN H, 8th digit, opt LV3)300-5244
5.3L (VIN C, 8th digit, opt L83)300-5453A
6.2L (VIN J, 8th digit, opt L86)300-5762

FAQ

Used GMC engines & transmissions

How much does a used GMC engine cost?

Price tracks the engine family more than the model year, and on GMC that usually means which of the 5.3L / 6.2L V8 and Duramax diesel you need. Displacement alone does not settle it, because the same badge can cover variants that differ in cost and availability. Tell us the year, model and VIN and you get a firm quote on the engine your vehicle actually takes, with availability confirmed before you pay.

Which GMC engines do you carry?

We regularly source GMC engines across the lineup, including the 6.5L V8 Turbo Diesel, 6.2L V8, 6.0L V8, 5.7L V8, 5.3L V8, 4.8L V8. If you don't see your exact engine, tell us the year, model, and VIN and a specialist confirms the right one before you pay.

Do you sell used GMC transmissions too?

Yes. Alongside used and remanufactured GMC engines, we source manual, automatic, and CVT GMC transmissions matched to your vehicle, backed by the same 12-month parts-replacement warranty.

Will the engine fit my exact GMC?

Fitment is confirmed before you pay. On the gas V8s, confirm whether the donor has cylinder deactivation hardware. On the Duramax, the generation decides the fuel system, so we match on VIN rather than displacement. Give us the year, model and 17-digit VIN and a specialist matches the correct engine to your exact application.

Are your used engines and transmissions tested?

Yes. Every used engine and transmission is compression- and oil-pressure tested and put through a rigorous inspection process by automotive experts before they ship.

What warranty comes with a part?

Every engine and transmission includes a 12-month parts-replacement warranty, plus lifetime support from ASE-certified experts. Approved claims are handled by replacement or store credit - we do not issue cash refunds. Labor is not covered on the standard warranty. You can upgrade to 3-year parts and labor coverage for $499 at the time of purchase. Full warranty details are provided with your order.

Can I get a longer warranty that covers labor?

Yes. The standard coverage is 12 months on parts. For $499 you can upgrade to a 3-year warranty that covers both parts and labor, purchased at the time of your order. Ask your specialist to add it when you confirm your part.
